Week 9 Podcasts and Audio

Discover - have watched the common craft video on "podcasting" I like these videos because they are very easy to understand a new concept.

I have watched the podcast from the British library called " Frank Hawkins on birds of Madagascar".

From the ABC I listened to an interview that Andrew Denton did on his show. He interviewed Tim Rogers from the popular band "who am I".

Explore - I have explore and listen to some podcasts linked on the library success wiki;
Book talks quick and simple, Cornell university Library and Uris Library historical tours, and Orange county Library.

Our library could set up on our website something similar to Orange County Library. We could offer RSS to distribute information and up and coming news and events. We could let our clients know the dates of book sales, author talks, children activities, and books that are being read at our book group. We could have podcasts of any of these events so clients can listen at a later date if they are unable to make the event.

week 8 Answer boards and social learning

Discover- I visited the Answer board Librarians wiki and view the Exemplary answer section. I saw that members of the public rated Librarians responses highly, which is a very good thing.

I also looked at the "signatures and tag lines that librarians use on answer boards.

Explore - If our staff had time to participate in "slamming the boards" I think it would be a good thing to do. It would be a real hoot to read and answer some the questions. As there is no need for the reference interview, people would probably ask questions they wouldn't ask in person. It could also come in handy if there are no more books left on the shelf to use as your reference, so why not ask the question and get the answers online.

Our customers will soon be able to rate and review online when we get our new upgrade in a few weeks time. I have been told by a systems staff member, a customer will be able to post an review or rating on any item, book,Cd,DVD etc in our collection. Once a staff member has viewed it and it has met our policy and is acceptable it will be able to be view by all clients. We haven't had any staff training on this yet, so I'm not totally aware of how it will function.

Week 7 - Tagging, folksonomies, delicious and LibraryThing

I taken a look around Del.icio.us and had a look at how Sutherland and Cleveland Public are using del.icio.us. I was impressed with Cleveland Library tags. I also had a quick look at the tags label "food", some nice recipe's to print out and try.

Have created an account with Delicious.
link to my ....
Delicious account

My experience and thoughts on using this tool;
This is one of the weeks that I have enjoyed, apart from you tube.
I can see the value of using this tool in the library. Making it public so every one can access it is really good too, it can save time if other libraries have already done the research on a particular topic and have found great websites. I could see it particularly good for HSC topics.
For private use, this tool would be good to have as well, as you can access it from anyway on any computer. And buy making it public as well you can share it with friends and family.

Technorati:
I have had a look at how Technorati works and I have decided I don't want my blog to be track.
I'm only have a blog for this learning activity and I really don't want everyone to be able to access it than is necessary for this exercise.

I have gone the search for bookmobile and was suceessful, however doing a search for "nswpln2008" I didn't get a result.

Library thing
completed the tour on "librarything" and created an Librarything account and posted onto my blogg

week 6 Video online, google video and you tube

Completed searches on you tube and google video with the subject headings
Lego, Liverpool plains & Kogarah .

I have checked out " we love our NJ libraries" and Qandanj: now your library is open late too."
the other examples I looked at where: National library week 2008: super sized and No cookies in the library- classic sesame street ( couldn't resist, I loved my sesame st. when I was little).

I have search "Mosman Library" on you tube.
Tamworth city library could put videos on the you tube of our events.
For example, some of the functions we have had recently are:
author talks, children's activities, Home lending morning tea, and CPLA conference that we recently held.

Have completed the half way survey.

I really enjoyed this week, it added some fun to the course. I hope to put on a video that I took of sandman and flacco at the conference that I have on my camera, I just need to work out how to do that.

week 5 - wikis

Book Lovers Wiki
loved it......
I would find this wiki very useful for my line of work, ie home delivery service.
i have a few clients who are great readers that don't just read westerns and romance. I'm always looking for great titles for them to read. The wiki layout is very friendly for people who aren't confident on computers.

Wookieepedia
great wiki if you are a "Star Wars" fan. Whether you are a casual or obessive fan of star wars, you would be in heaven with this wiki.

Library Success: A best practices Wiki
wow... where do you start with this wiki, so much information.
I did a simple search "reading" and I was amazed at what subjects came up.
such as:
getting kids to read, recommending reading, marketing, programs for young adults, literacy programs, just to name a few.

PB Wiki Tour
have watched the tour and edit an entry to home library service on 24/9/08

week4 RSS

What do you like about RSS and newsreaders? that you can get current information at your finger tips any time of the day when you have set it up.
What sites did you select for your RSS reader?
1.powerhouse museum, picture of the day
2. publisher weekly- best sellers
3.ABC news on entertainment
4. Blogline news
5. ABC news on health issues
6. ABC news breaking stories
How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work? the only way I would use this in my line of work would be to keep update on new realeases and interesting books for some of my clients on the home delivery service.
How can libraries use RSS or take advantage of this new technology? If you worked on the information desk or where an reference librarian, you would find this technology very useful.
Did you find any good examples of other library blogs? no, I haven't found week 4 very interesting at all.
